Tarash Upazila is located in the historic Chalanbil, about 40 km west of the Sirajganj district headquarters. No universal historical information was found about the naming of Tarash upazila. However, there are two names for naming from old books and conventional stories. Tarash upazila was once full of deep forests. According to folklore, Banamali Roy Bahadur, a zamindar of Faridpur in Bonai Nagar, saw a cow swimming in the middle of Tarash and Kahit on his way on a boat trip. Mr. Roy Bahadur is curious, "Why is the cow entering the forest after crossing a distance of about two kilometers?" It is not uncommon to have tigers in the forest. He instructed Gaviti to follow. After following the cow, it is seen that the cow is milking from her butt on a high place in the middle of the forest. The king's curiosity grew. Later he sees that there are a few cracks in the place of milking. A Shivling is seen after removing some soil from the crack. Seeing such a wonderful event, Roy Bahadur considered the place a holy place and installed a Shivling there and cleared the jungle and set up a royal house in the area which is still in use. Mr. Roy Bahadur's mother's name was Bhabani, after whom Bhabanipur was renamed 15 km north of Tarash and a temple of Ma Bhabani was established. Roy Bahadur's daughter's name was Tara Devi. Many think that the name of the zamindar's daughter is Tarash from Tara, later the origin of the name Tarash. The second opinion about naming is that there was a time when tigers, bears and robbers were in a state of terror in the jungle. That is why the name Tarash or Tarash originates from Tras.
